2000 APICS / Canpolar Science
Communication Awards
|
In April 2001, the first APICS/Canpolar Communication Award was presented to Dr. Robert Hawkes of Mount Allison University.
This award will be presented annually to a scientist who best communicates scientific research to the general public.
The review committee had the following to say about unanimously choosing Dr. Hawkes as the winner:
Dr. Hawkes is an outstanding public ambassador for science.
He is in high demand to give volunteer presentations on science in general and physics in particular to
various mass media, high school teachers, and students, both regionally and locally.
He has widely communicated his research to the general public via print, radio, and in person, and is
particularly sought after by the media to discuss various astrophysical phenomena.
These presentations, talks, papers, and articles are well received and understood by a wide range of
community members.
It is for his longstanding leadership, commitment and excellence in the communication of scientific
research to the general public that the review committee has chosen him as a most worthy and fitting
first winner of the APICS/Canpolar Science Communication Award.
Two more versions of this award will be introduced over time;
the second to a media journalist who writes the best article on a scientific issue for the public;
and a third to an elementary or secondary school teacher who encourages students' interest in
science and technology through science fairs, school science clubs, or similar activities.
Appreciation is extended to Canpolar East for providing a cash prize of $500 to each award
winner over the next three years.
