On Sunday, September 4th, 2005, APICS lost a friend and colleague, Dr. Joe Brown, Professor of Biology at the Ocean
Sciences Centre, Memorial University of Newfoundland. Joe passed away suddenly at his home in Shoe Cove,
Newfoundland, at the age of 58. Joe first became involved with APICS in the 1980’s and was a member of the APICS
Aquaculture Subcommittee which became a separate committee in 1990. Thus, Joe represented MUN on the APICS
Aquaculture Committee for 15 years and was Chairperson of the Committee from 1997 to 2000. It was rare to have
him miss a meeting. He regularly attended the APICS Aquaculture Conferences, always bringing students with him.
Joe was well loved and respected by all those with whom he interacted. He had a witty sense of humour and a rare
wisdom of how to interact with even the most difficult people. He was a friend to many. Joe was admired by both
his friends and colleagues for his dedication to aquaculture, both as a teacher and researcher. Joe foresaw the
importance of science in aquaculture when he helped form the APICS Aquaculture Committee and Conferences in 1990
and research on alternate species for aquaculture came a long way because of Joe. But his major devotion was to
his students who admired him intensely. A scholarship has been established in his memory, and donations may be
directed to MUN Alumni office, specifying the Joe Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund. Joe: you will be missed by
your many friends. APICS Aquaculture Committee meetings won’t be the same without you and we’ll continue to
lift a glass in your memory!
